About Me
Hello! My name is Ben Short! I have been tutoring students for over fifteen years. If you want to read a little about me, I'm happy to share with you some of my story.
I have always had an aptitude for math. When I was in grade 2 my class handed out workbooks for the whole year. There was a group of students who were doing the Kumon tutoring program, so were able to finish all the grade 2 book and get onto grades 3 and 4. I thought that looked fun, so I started spending time on my own. I managed to complete all the workbooks from Grades 2–6. For the next four years I didn't learn any more math because I had learned it all.
My next chance for acceleration came when I was in grade 8. My high school pushed me to finish four grades in two years so I was doing AP calculus by grade 10. I had another 'boring' year in grade 12.
My Studies
I went to UBC and did a bachelor of science, which I loved. I basically got to think about equations all day every day for four years. I did a double major in Math and Physics, so got to learn about Quantum Physics and Electromagnetics and many other interesting things. I learned super advanced math and loved every minute.
One of my highlights was doing a summer internship at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, a particle physics lab in the middle of Canada. This was an amazing experience, being part of a team on the cutting edge of science.
Since my undergraduate time I have done jobs in several fields including quant trading at a hedge fund and working as a pastor!
My Tutoring Experience
In grade 11 that I started my journey of teaching and helping others learn math and the sciences. My very first student was called Dominic. My school paired us in their tutoring program. After I graduated from school Dominic’s mom asked me to come to their house and she started to pay me. I went on to help his older sister too, my second student.
Over the years I have helped students from grade six to second year university students in mathematics and physics. I have walked with students in sciences, literature, history and mathematics. The core of what I have done is grade 10-12 students in math and physics.
It is a great joy to see a student move from frustrations to confidence. Many students have negative feelings towards the subjects that brought me lots of joy. My beliefs is that when students have the right teacher and the right environment they can grow in confidence and joy. I have seen many many students come to love math and physics.
